For the “Massenet, a must!” cycle, the concert “From sketch to jewel” is staged on Thursday October 13, 2022 at the Palazzetto Bru Zane, center of French romantic music in Venice.

The French mélodie was a genre that composers approached with different goals: to please the general public and thus achieve commercial success; to demonstrate their skills in order to impress opera house directors; to woo the upper classes in order to attract patronage; or to create a perfect work of art, a jewel that frames a precious stone: poetry. Around Massenet, a whole generation of composers tried to combine these different goals into a single artistic achievement.

The concert program “From sketch to jewel” features melodies by Jules Massenet, Ernest Chausson, Gabriel Pierné, Henry Février and Paul-Joseph Hillemacher.

The artists of the concert are:

  • Marie Gautrot, mezzo-soprano
  • Frédéric Rouillon, piano
