First staged in 1977 with Robert Wilson and Lucinda Childs in the lead roles, the play “I was sitting on my patio this guy appeared I thought I was hallucinating” is now reborn with two prestigious new performers Christopher Nell and Julie Shanahan.
“I Was Sitting on My Patio…. ” is a monologue devoid of any apparent drama or tragedy, consisting of a random flow of association of ideas that spill over the confines of a bare black and white set, accompanied by angular movements that become increasingly feverish. What is striking about the work is its clinical minimalism, and the formal austerity created through the prism of its contradictions. In this verbal zapping nothing actually happens. Everything happens and then happens again in the body of a different person. And, somewhat like a merry-go-round, it will go on happening.
The piece is in the original language with surtitles and is directed by Robert Wilson and Lucinda Childs, with music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Schubert, Jean-Baptiste Lully, Michael Galasso.
