"Il capolavoro e la perla rara" - Ismaël Margain and Quatuor Hanson in concert

At the Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista in Venice, the pianist Ismaël Margain and the musical group Quatuor Hanson (Anton Hanson, violin – Jules Dussap, violin – Gabrielle Lafait, viola – Simon Dechambre, cello) hold the concert “Il capolavoro e la perla rara” (The masterpiece and the rare pearl) on April 3, 2022. The two quintets with piano by Franck and Strohl are included in the cycle “The World of César Franck (1822-1890)“.

Composed seven years apart (Franck’s in 1879, Strohl’s in 1886), the two piano quintets on the program in this concert had very different fates. First performed privately in January 1880 at the Société nationale de musique (with Camille Saint-Saëns at the piano), Franck’s Quintet established itself over time as its author’s major work, a manifesto of cyclic form and a demonstration of musical architecture. By contrast, the Grande Fantaisie-Quintette by debutante Rita Strohl has never had the honor of publication and certainly has never been performed in public. Between an uncontested masterpiece and an absolute rarity, the evening promises the audience unprecedented emotions.
