Until October 23, 2022 the “Casa dei Tre Oci” in Venice presents the largest retrospective dedicated to the French-Swiss photographer Sabine Weiss, who died at the age of 97 years in her home in Paris on December 28, 2021. Sabine Weiss was among the major representatives of French humanist photography along with Robert Doisneau, Willy Ronis, Edouard Boubat, Brassaï and Izis.
The exhibition “Sabine Weiss. The poetry of the instant” is the first and most important tribute to her career, with over 200 photographs. The main part of the exhibition recounts moments of the photographer’s international recognition and collaboration with major international magazines, such as “Picture Post“, “Paris Match“, “Vogue“, “Le Ore“, “The New York Times“, “Life“, “Newsweek“.
Among the shots exhibited at the “Tre Oci“, there is also the unpublished series dedicated to asylums, photos of children and passers-by, a section dedicated to her portraits of painters, sculptors, actors and musicians, New York from the Bronx and Harlem to Chinatown and Ninth Avenue of the 50s, photos of her travels in the 80s.
In addition to the photographs, the exhibition will also feature excerpts from documentary films dedicated to her (“La Chambre Noire” in 1965; “Sabine Weiss” in 2005; “My Work as a Photographer” in 2014) in which the photographer recounted, in different periods of her life, her artistic journey, her travel experiences and the difficulty of being a female photographer.
