Scipione nelle Spagne

Scipione nelle Spagne
first performance in modern times
Scipione nelle Spagne Malibran theater

Scipione nelle Spagne” with music by Antonio Caldara and libretto by Apostolo Zeno will be staged at the Teatro Malibran. The new production of the “Fondazione Teatro La Fenice” in collaboration with the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory of Venice is the first representation of the opera in modern times.

After the taking in 209 B.C. of Nova Carthago (today’s Cartagena), the Roman general Publius Cornelius Scipio was praised by ancient historians for his mercy and moderation. Delivered to him as war booty, a beautiful virgin of noble birth begged to be returned to her parents and fiancé. The request was granted, but only with the condition of collaborating in the peace between Rome and Carthage. Over the centuries, the story became a favorite subject in painting, theater and opera. In 1722 two Venetians, librettist Apostolo Zeno and composer Antonio Caldara, applied it to their patron, Emperor Charles VI of Habsburg, featured as heir to Roman virtues both in war and in peace.

The artistic performers are the winners of the Master Opera Studio auditions, while conductor is Francesco Erle, director Francesco Bellotto, sets Alessia Colosso, costumes Carlos Tieppo, light designer Andrea Benetello.
