All houses in Burano are colorful, but the house of Bepi Suà (also known as “Bepi delle Caramelle“) is much more: decorated with geometric shapes of all kinds such as circles, squares, triangles, dyed all the colors of the rainbow.
In addition to being a lover of painting, Giuseppe Toselli (Bepi Suà’s real name) was also a film buff. A passion born with his work at the Favin Cinema. When the cinema closed, he started selling candy in Burano’s Piazza Galuppi: hence the nickname Bepi delle Caramelle.
Until the early 1980s, on hot summer evenings, he was used to organize open-air cinema in his campiello: after hanging a white sheet on the wall of his house, he projected cartoons and funny movies to delight the children of Burano.
Bepi is gone now, but all the “former children“of Burano who pass by his house with friends remember him as that strange gentleman who every afternoon painted a new geometric shape on the wall of his colorful house, dark inside but full of old objects such as televisions, tape recorders and films.
Until the year he died, his house had one more design every day. Since then, the exterior facade has remained unchanged and the house has been restored. To this day, Bepi‘s house remains the most colorful house in Burano, it appears on many postcards and is well-known all over the world. It is without a shadow of a doubt the most famous house in Burano.
