The Goldoni Theater is staging “The Birthday Party” from December 15 to 18, 2022. This play was first staged on April 28, 1958 at the Arts Theatre in Cambridge and directed by Peter Wood, and is one of the most highly regarded and performed plays by Harold Pinter, who wrote it when he was only 27 years old, influenced by the theater of Samuel Beckett and his reading of Franz Kafka‘s The Trial.
The story of “The Birthday Party” starts from a seemingly innocuous situation and then blurs into the improbable because of its characters. Fearful individuals, isolated from the world in a confined space, unhappy but safe. Until something or someone comes along, shaking their perturbation and posing a threat.
After his successful edition of “The Homecoming“, German theater director Peter Stein resumes his personal journey into Harold Pinter’s extraordinary dramaturgy and does so again with an early text by the great English author and again with a so-called “comedy of menace“, or rather a play with a seemingly normal beginning that evolves into absurd, hostile or threatening situations. On stage are some of his most “faithful” actors such as Maddalena Crippa, Alessandro Averone and Gianluigi Fogacci, who are joined by Fernando Maraghini, Alessandro Sampaoli and Elisa Scatigno.
