From March 12, 2023 until January 7, 2024, “CHRONORAMA. Photographic Treasures of the 20th Century“, the world’s first photography exhibition dedicated to masterpieces from Condé Nast’s archives, some recently acquired by the Pinault Collection, is open to the public at Palazzo Grassi.
Curated by Matthieu Humery, advisor of photography, the exhibition brings together over four hundred works that bring the 20th century back to life through the events, social phenomena and illustrious personalities that marked it. Tracing the century from the 1910s to the early 1980s, this selection presents the works of more than one hundred and fifty international artists such as Edward Steichen, Berenice Abbott, Cecil Beaton, Lee Miller, André Kertész, Horst P. Horst, Diane Arbus, Irving Penn, and Helmut Newton, among the photographers; Eduardo Garcia Benito, Helen Dryden, and George Wolfe Plank, among the illustrators. Among the greatest talents of their generation, these artists defined the photographic and artistic aesthetics of their time through the publication of their work in Condé Nast magazines, including Vogue, Vanity Fair, House & Garden, Glamour and GQ.
This historical selection will be put into perspective with Chronorama Redux, a project offering a contemporary look at these works from the Pinault Collection through the work of four artists: Tarrah Krajnak, Erik N. Mack, Giulia Andreani, and Daniel Spivakov.
