From April 10 to November 23, 2025, Le Stanze della Fotografia will host a monumental retrospective celebrating the art of Robert Mapplethorpe (1946–1989), one of the most influential and provocative photographers of the 20th century. Curated by Denis Curti, the exhibition features over 200 works, including pieces shown in Italy for the first time.
Titled “Robert Mapplethorpe. Le forme del classico” (The Forms of Classic), the exhibition highlights the timeless elegance of Mapplethorpe’s compositions. Themes explored include the sensuality of the human body, the poetic beauty of flowers, and the interplay between photography and classical sculpture. Curator Denis Curti notes Mapplethorpe’s ability to merge classical aesthetics with modern photography, creating a bridge between past and present.
An Artistic Trilogy: this retrospective marks the first chapter in a trilogy celebrating Mapplethorpe’s legacy. The journey continues in 2026 with “The Forms of Desire” in Milan and “The Forms of Beauty” in Rome.
Exhibition Highlights
- Bodies and Classicism: Photographs evoking the aesthetics of ancient statues, celebrating the perfection of form.
