From May 16 to 24, 2025, the historic Teatro La Fenice will stage a new production of Attila by Giuseppe Verdi, one of the most emblematic operas connected to Venice. This monumental work, Verdi’s second title composed for La Fenice, had its premiere in the lagoon city in 1846 and uniquely narrates the mythical founding of Venice itself, recounting the flight of refugees from Aquileia to the island of Rivo Alto.
Attila — based on Zacharias Werner’s play Attila, König der Hunnen — blends historical drama with mythic grandeur, offering Verdi an opportunity to explore innovative dramaturgical forms. Although its original debut faced challenges due to a less-than-stellar cast, the opera quickly gained recognition, securing its place in the repertoire of major theaters, including a celebrated return to Venice just five years after Rigoletto‘s premiere.
This new Fondazione Teatro La Fenice production features Sebastiano Rolli conducting the esteemed Orchestra and Chorus of La Fenice, with chorus master Alfonso Caiani. The stage direction is by Leo Muscato, with evocative sets by Federica Parolini, costumes by Silvia Aymonino, and lighting by Alessandro Verazzi.
An outstanding cast brings Verdi’s characters to life: Michele Pertusi as the fierce Attila, Vladimir Stoyanov as Ezio, Anastasia Bartoli as the fearless Odabella, Andeka Gorrotxategi as Foresto, Andrea Schifaudo as Uldino, and Francesco Milanese as Leone.
This eagerly awaited production promises to celebrate both the grandeur of Verdi’s music and the spirit of Venice itself.
