On October 22, 2025, the Sale Apollinee of Teatro La Fenice will host a concert dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Guido Alberto Fano, presented in collaboration with the Archivio Musicale Guido Alberto Fano Onlus. The evening brings together the renowned pianist Massimiliano Ferrati and Mark Rothko Ensemble—Carlo Lazari (violin), Benjamin Bernstein (viola), Marianna Sinagra (cello), Giorgio Di Giorgi (flute), and Nicoletta Sanzin (harp)—for a program that combines two cornerstones of the chamber music repertoire.
The concert will open with Robert Schumann’s Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 44, a masterwork that revolutionized the piano quintet form. Written in 1842, Schumann’s piece is distinguished by its sweeping lyricism, bold harmonic language, and the exhilarating dialogue between piano and strings, qualities that have made it one of the most beloved chamber works of the Romantic era.
The program continues with Guido Alberto Fano’s Quintet in C major, a rare opportunity to hear the music of a composer whose career was marked by both critical acclaim and historical challenges. A pupil of Giuseppe Martucci, Fano developed a refined style that wove together late-Romantic lyricism, contrapuntal mastery, and an openness to the currents of his time. His Quintet exemplifies these traits, offering music that is at once intimate and expansive, lyrical yet structurally rigorous.
This commemorative evening not only celebrates Fano’s artistic legacy but also reaffirms La Fenice’s role as a place where history, memory, and music converge, giving voice to treasures that continue to enrich Italy’s cultural heritage.
