Until March 1, 2026, Ca’ Pesaro – Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna presents the exhibition “Gastone Novelli”, curated by Elisabetta Barisoni and Paola Bonani, in collaboration with the Archivio Gastone Novelli in Rome. The show celebrates the centenary of Gastone Novelli (Vienna, 1925 – Milan, 1968), one of the key figures in Italian painting after World War II.
The exhibition stems from the recent and significant donation of several of the artist’s works to the Venetian civic collections and offers a comprehensive journey through Novelli’s career. About sixty works—from both public and private collections—trace his evolution from the Informal style of the 1950s to the conceptual and politically charged works of his final years.
Occupying eight rooms on Ca’ Pesaro’s second floor, the exhibition opens with the paintings created during the period of L’Esperienza Moderna, the magazine Novelli co-founded with Achille Perilli in 1957. It continues with his exploration of the relationship between image and language, where words, symbols, and signs coexist in a delicate, poetic balance. The path culminates with his final works, created for his solo exhibition at the 1968 Venice Biennale, in which painting becomes an instrument of ethical and political reflection.
Alongside celebrated masterpieces, the show includes rediscovered works never before exhibited, revealed thanks to the General Catalogue of his paintings and sculptures published in 2011. Archival materials further illuminate Novelli’s multifaceted intellect—his passion for literature, philosophy, and the vibrant network of artists and thinkers who shaped his brief but extraordinary life.
