As part of the Throughout the Season series, the Palazzetto Bru Zane will host its Christmas Concert on December 11, 2025. The evening will feature the Quatuor Våren—Jean-Baptiste Iachemet and Elliott Pages (violins), David Heusler (viola), and Adèle Quartier de Andrade (cello)—in a program dedicated to rediscovering forgotten gems of the French string quartet tradition.
While music history often places the string quartet firmly within the Germanic lineage of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, 19th-century France also cultivated a rich and varied repertoire for this ensemble. Many of these works have since fallen into obscurity, waiting to be brought back to life on the concert stage. With this performance, the Quatuor Våren continues its mission of championing these overlooked voices.
The program presents two rare works that reflect contrasting traditions. Auguste de Sayve’s Quartet No. 2, composed in the late 1820s, reveals the influence of his teacher Antoine Reicha, with its emphasis on balance, clarity, and formal elegance. In contrast, Charles Dancla’s Quartet No. 8, written in the late 1850s, showcases the virtuosic brilliance of a violinist trained under Pierre Baillot, where instrumental display meets expressive lyricism. Together, these pieces highlight the diversity of approaches within French chamber music of the period.
The concert, held in the festive atmosphere of the Palazzetto Bru Zane, will be followed by a convivial toast, offering audiences the chance to celebrate the season while rediscovering the richness of France’s 19th-century quartet repertoire.
