In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Luciano Berio’s birth, Teatro La Fenice presents a landmark new production of his masterpiece Coro, featuring a world premiere choreography by Wayne McGregor. This exceptional performance marks a dialogue between body and sound, memory and experimentation, breathing new life into Berio’s groundbreaking work composed between 1974 and 1976.
The production brings together twenty dancers—ten from the Wayne McGregor Company and ten selected from the most talented participants of the Biennale College Danza (2021–2025)—who will share the stage with the forty voices of the Siena Cathedral Choir “Guido Chigi Saracini”. Each singer will be paired by register with a corresponding musician from the Teatro La Fenice Orchestra, creating a unique synergy between voice, instrument, and movement.
McGregor’s original choreography is complemented by a redesigned stage set, creating a visual and auditory experience that reflects the depth and innovation of Berio’s composition. Originally premiered in Italy at the Biennale Teatro e Musica in 1976 under the direction of Luca Ronconi, Coro is celebrated for its fusion of folk melodies, classical traditions, and avant-garde experimentation—a perfect canvas for this centenary reinterpretation.
This tribute is presented by La Biennale di Venezia in collaboration with the Fondazione Teatro La Fenice, with the support of the Ministry of Culture. The performance promises to be not only a celebration of Berio’s enduring legacy but also a mesmerizing encounter of sound, movement, and memory, offering audiences a chance to experience the genius of one of Italy’s most influential composers in a stunning contemporary vision.
