A Tribute to the Sea and to Venice: VEVEGLASS’ “America’s Cup” Sculpture Shines in the World Series Regattas

In May 2012, Venice offered an unforgettable stage for the America’s Cup World Series — a series of breathtaking regattas leading up to the prestigious 34th America’s Cup in 2013. Against one of the most iconic backdrops in the world, the racecourse unfolded from the Venice Lido straight into the heart of the lagoon, with Piazza San Marco as the grand theatrical finale. In a city built on water and defined by its centuries-old maritime legacy, only Venice could turn the bell tower of San Marco, affectionately known as “el paron de casa”, into a virtual finish line.

Sailing enthusiasts from around the globe were treated to a spectacle that blended cutting-edge sport with timeless beauty. The teams competing included:

  • Luna Rossa Piranha and Luna Rossa Swordfish (Italy)
  • Artemis Racing (Sweden)
  • ORACLE Team USA (United States)
  • Emirates Team New Zealand
  • Team Korea
  • Energy Team (France)
  • China Team

These elite sailing crews raced aboard high-speed AC45 catamarans, showcasing their skills and pushing the boundaries of technology and teamwork across the glistening waters of the Venetian lagoon.

Amidst this extraordinary blend of competition and culture, one prize stood out — a symbol not only of victory, but of artistry and heritage: the “America’s Cup” glass sculpture created by VEVEGLASS.

Entirely handmade in Murano glass, the sculpture was one of the special prizes awarded to the best-ranked crews. It was offered during both the America’s Cup World Series regattas and the “City of Venice Trophy”, an event organized by the Compagnia della Vela to celebrate the occasion and Venice’s indelible link to the sea.

The VEVEGLASS “America’s Cup” is more than just a trophy — it’s a masterpiece of craftsmanship, designed to reflect the dynamism of the race and the fluid elegance of sailing. With flowing lines, crystal brilliance, and a sculptural form that seems to move even while standing still, the piece pays tribute to the power of the wind, the waves, and the hands of the Venetian glassmasters who brought it to life.

Created using age-old Murano techniques — including glassblowing, sculpting, and lampworking — this unique work captures the soul of Venice and projects it into the international spotlight. Every curve, shimmer, and reflection evokes both the adrenaline of the regatta and the calm poetry of the lagoon.

Offering this exclusive artwork as a prize was VEVEGLASS’ way of uniting tradition and innovation, just as the America’s Cup does on the water. It was a celebration of a shared spirit: daring, elegant, and deeply rooted in the love of the sea.

In a city where history is reflected in every canal and palazzo, and where the wind still whispers tales of sailors and merchants from centuries past, the 2012 America’s Cup World Series was a moment when sport, art, and Venice herself became one.

And at the heart of it all, the VEVEGLASS “America’s Cup” sculpture stood as a beacon of excellence — a shining, handcrafted homage to human ambition, maritime culture, and the timeless magic of Murano glass.
