The 76th Venice International Film Festival, organized by La Biennale di Venezia, will run in Venice Lido from August 28th to September 7th, 2019. Founded in 1932, this is the oldest film festival and one of the most prestigious festivals in the world.
The film festival takes place every year at the Lido of Venice, in the historic Palace of Cinema and other nearby buildings. The small Venetian island in the 10 days of the festival has always been its best dress and transforms into a little paradise: it is customary to find actors and actresses sitting at the tables of the historic Lyon’s Club or among the typical wooden huts of the sandy beaches of Lido.
For years, fans of the festival walk along the seafront, moving from the historical Hotel Excelsior to the Des Bains, hoping to meet VIP: because in the best of scripts, everything is possible in Venice! And the film festival means parties: Venetian palaces are transformed into dream scenery for armoured and exclusive events and gala.
The aim of the Festival is to raise awareness and promote the various aspects of international cinema in all its forms: as art, entertainment and as an industry, in a spirit of freedom and dialogue. The Festival also organises retrospectives and tributes to major figures as a contribution towards a better understanding of the history of cinema.
On the final night (September 7) of the upcoming 76th Venice Film Festival, the International Jury of Venezia 76, chaired by Lucrecia Martel and composed of nine international celebrities in the spheres of film and culture from different countries, will assign the following official prizes among the feature-length films in the Competition:
· Golden Lion for Best Film
· Silver Lion – Grand Jury Prize
· Silver Lion – Award for Best Director
· Coppa Volpi for Best Actor
· Coppa Volpi for Best Actress
· Award for Best Screenplay
· Special Jury Prize
· Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best New Young Actor or Actress.
Pedro Almodóvar will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement for directors. The decision was made by the board of the Biennale di Venezia, chaired by Paolo Baratta, which espoused the proposal made by the Director of the Festival, Alberto Barbera.
