From May 16 to 18, 2025, the Goldoni Theater presents “L’ultima domenica di agosto” (The Last Sunday in August), a gripping new work written and directed by Fulvio Pepe. Inspired by Lev Tolstoy’s The Power of Darkness, this original play delves into human frailty, passion, and moral conflict, blending timeless themes with contemporary resonance.
At the heart of the story is a powerful yet vulnerable woman, bold and unrestrained, swept away by an all-consuming love for a younger man. Her desperation to preserve this dream of happiness drives her to cross moral boundaries, confronting the limits of her own strength.
The play takes inspiration from Tolstoy’s rare and compelling work, which itself was based on the real-life story of Efrem Koloskov, a farmer who committed a heinous act to cover up his dark secrets. Fulvio Pepe reimagines this tale, bringing a deeply emotional and modern perspective to the stage.
In a commitment to accessibility, the performances on May 17 and 18 will be inclusive for audiences who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or partially sighted. Innovative digital tools like tablets, smart glasses, headphones, subtitles, and audio descriptions will ensure everyone can immerse themselves in the powerful narrative.
