The Teatro La Fenice stages a new production by the “Fondazione Teatro La Fenice” and the first Venetian performance of “Peter Grimes“.
Premiered in 1945, Benjamin Britten‘s first major opera to a libretto by Montagu Slater tells the story of a fisherman living in the Borough, a coastal village in Suffolk. Peter Grimes is a tragic character: aspiring to betterment but brutal, he is often scapegoated by gossipy people, and loses his life at sea amidst the indifference of the villagers. Although he appears to be involved in the death of two young apprentices, the opera never reveals whether he is a murderer, a violent guardian, or just a victim of his obsession for money. With delightful orchestral music, powerful refrains, and stunning solo arias, Britten’s music evokes a complex vision of nature’s majesty and harsh human relationships.
In addition to the orchestra and chorus of the Teatro La Fenice, the conductor is Juraj Valčuha, chorus master Alfonso Caiani, director Paul Curran, sets and costumes Gary McCann, light designer Thomas C. Hase. Artistic cast: Peter Grimes Brenden Gunnell, Ellen Orford Emma Bell, Captain Balstrode Mark S. Doss, Auntie Sara Fulgoni, First Niece Patricia Westley, Second Niece Jessica Cale, Robert Boles Cameron Becker, Swallow Sion Goronwy, Mrs. Sedley Rosalind Plowright, Rev.
