Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi
Three acts opera in La Fenice Theater

Rigoletto is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi on a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on the play by Victor Hugo “Le Roi s’amuse” (“The king has fun”). With “Il trovatore” and “La traviata” it forms the so-called “popular trilogy” of Verdi.

The tragic story revolves around the licentious Duke of Mantua, his hunch-backed court jester Rigoletto, and Rigoletto’s beautiful daughter Gilda. The opera’s original title, “La maledizione” (The Curse), refers to a curse placed on both the Duke and Rigoletto by a courtier whose daughter the Duke has seduced with Rigoletto’s encouragement. The curse comes to fruition when Gilda falls in love with the Duke and sacrifices her life to save him from the assassin hired by her father.

Intense drama of passion, betrayal, filial love and revenge, “Rigoletto” offers a combination of melodic richness and dramatic power. From the musical point of view since the prelude, the theme of the curse is constantly repeated, through the repetition of the note Do in double-pointed rhythm.
