Roberto Devereux is an opera in three acts by Gaetano Donizetti on a libretto by Salvadore Cammarano, based on the tragedy of Jacques-François Ancelot “Elisabeth d’Angleterre”.

With “Anna Bolena” (Henry VIII’s second wife, Anne Boleyn) and “Maria Stuarda” (Mary Stuart, the Queen of Scots), she is part of the so-called “Cycle of the Tudor queens” by Donizetti.

In the role of Elizabeth, singers such as Montserrat Caballé, Leyla Gencer, Beverly Sills, Edita Gruberová, Raina Kabaivanska and Mariella Devia were challenged.

The story is inspired by the relationship between Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex with Queen Elizabeth I of England. Elizabeth is in love with the Earl of Essex, Roberto Devereux. But Roberto is in love with Sara, wife of the Duke of Nottingham, his best friend, who reciprocates. Earl Roberto is also accused of treason by the persistent voices of Lord Cecil and Sir Gualtiero Raleigh, while Elizabeth suffers from the duties of a sovereign that contrast with the sentiments of a woman, until she discovers the betrayal of the beloved who is finally condemned.
