The “Vogalonga” is a 30 km regatta through the city of Venice and the Venetian lagoon. The departure takes place in the San Marco Basin. Going around the island of Sant’Elena, you will skirt the islands of Vignole, Sant’Erasmo and San Francesco del Deserto. Halfway through the route you reach Burano and, skirting the islands of Mazzorbo, Madonna del Monte and San Giacomo in Paludo, the course enters Murano crossing its Grand Canal. Once in Venice, you pass through the Cannaregio canal, reach the Grand Canal and then the arrival site at Punta della Dogana in front of San Marco. Almost any rowing or paddle boat can participate and there is even a separate category for kayaks. In this regatta there are usually more than a thousand boats of various types.
The Vogalonga is not a competitive race, there are no winners, and all participants are awarded a certificate of participation. It is about being there in attendance. In 2021 the Vogalonga will most likely be held on Sunday 23 May 2021.
The “Vogalonga” is an act of love for Venice and the water that surrounds it, for its lagoon and its islands, for its rowing and its boats, and it maintains over time the purpose for which it was born: spreading knowledge and conscious respect for the nature and culture of Venice.
