From February 21 to 23, 2025, as part of the Venice Carnival and the romantic season, the Palazzetto Bru Zane presents the cine-concert “Charlie Chaplin incontra Carmen” (From the mask to the screen) – a delightful journey into the world of disguise, comedy, and cinema, introduced by Marco Bellano and accompanied on piano by Gabriele Dal Santo.
Disguise, a hallmark of Carnival, is also central to early cinema. No mask is more iconic than that of Charlot, the little tramp created by Charlie Chaplin: with his fake mustache, oversized clothes, and cane, Charlot embodies humor and a touch of melancholy. Yet, Charlot was just one of Chaplin’s many “faces”. In The Masquerader (1914), we peek behind the scenes of his comedy, where he dons a female costume in a hilarious twist. Then, in Charlie Chaplin’s Burlesque on Carmen (1916), Chaplin becomes an officer in Seville, parodying Cecil B. DeMille’s 1915 adaptation of Bizet’s Carmen.
The films, lovingly restored by the Cineteca di Bologna, British Film Institute, and other collaborators, will be paired with a new score based on Bizet’s music. The combination of Chaplin’s humor and Bizet’s timeless melodies promises an evening of laughter, nostalgia, and musical beauty.
