Henrik Ibsen’s original play “Gengangere” (Ghosts) is considered a social comedy or more properly a bourgeois drama. The ‘ghosts’ are the shadows of the past that strike the existential drama of the protagonists.
Many years have passed since the end of the story of “Ghosts” as told by the Norwegian playwright. Regine, by now a grown woman, goes to visit Mrs. Alving in the house where the tragedy took place. They seem to be two women now at peace with the past and its ghosts, but it is not so. Those ghosts keep coming back.
This new version of Ibsen’s masterpiece, adapted by the Genoese playwright Fausto Paravidino, directed by the Lithuanian Rimas Tuminas and interpreted among others by the German actress Andrea Jonasson, faithfully takes up the story setting it years later, in a sort of sequel, adding a new frame to the story that adds up to the story itself in a continuous game of Chinese boxes.
