“Il Barbiere di Siviglia” (The Barber of Seville) is an opera buffa by Gioachino Rossini, on a libretto in two acts by Cesare Sterbini based on the French comedy Le Barbier de Séville by Beaumarchais. This work is considered to be one of the greatest masterpieces of comedy within music, and has been described as the opera buffa of all “opere buffe”.
Venetian director Bepi Morassi’s production fits into this ambience perfectly, attempting to reenact the opera as it must have been seen when it premièred in 1812.
Most of those involved are Italian, the costumes are authentic, while the sets behind a false proscenium are simple but effective, evoking Seville through an orange tree and horizon.
The director Francesco Ivan Ciampa, alternating with Marco Paladin for two performances, will conduct the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro La Fenice. The performance lasts about 2 hours 55 minutes.
