The Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti di Venezia, with the support of Michael Werner Gallery, presents “Markus Lüpertz: Palazzo Loredan“, an exhibition of recent paintings and sculptures by the iconic German artist Markus Lüpertz. The rich historical library and the rooms of the extraordinary Palazzo Loredan in Campo Santo Stefano offer a unique and unexpected environment to observe the artist’s works.
One of the most important and influential contemporary artists in post-World War II Europe, Lüpertz is engaged in a critical dialogue with painters of the past. The artist has stated: “I live with artists that I constantly retrieve from the recesses of history, and then they become part of my daily life, they are my companions, they exist for me. I face them as if they were alive“.
In addition to drawing from art history and investigating traditional subjects, the artist reinterprets art-historical and philosophical rhetorical figures such as allegory, meditation on mortality, and idyllic utopia.
