TBA21-Academy presents at Ocean Space two new exhibitions for the 2022 program: the solo exhibition dedicated to the South African artist Dineo Seshee Bopape and the solo exhibition dedicated to the Portuguese artist Diana Policarpo. Although independent from each other, the two solo exhibitions are connected by several common elements, and give voice and body to the ocean, as a repository of colonial histories whose narratives intertwine past, present and future.
Dineo Seshee Bopape‘s work begins with a voyage to the Solomon Islands, from where the artist makes his way to the plantations of the Mississippi River to Jamaica, before returning home to South Africa. With this project, the artist takes a further step toward connecting the Earth with the memory of the Ocean.
The last work commissioned to Diana Policarpo for Ocean Space will see the development of a multimedia installation, which uses video and audio to emphasize a sense of presence, immortalizing, at the same time, the artist’s personal research process. Using technological lenses, cameras are able to capture the activities of living things in layers that the human eye cannot perceive.
The two installations accompany the visitor in an experience that aims to break the crystalline and immutable separation that disjuncts nature and culture, culture and myth, science and faith.
