Venice recalls its glorious past with one of the most anticipated events of the year: the Historical Regatta. This year will take place on Sunday 1 September in a riot of historical boats, colors, drapes, costumed figures and the best rowers of the lagoon, ready to compete in the Voga alla Veneta competitions.
Spectacular is the famous historic procession along the Grand Canal before the races: hundreds of typical Venetian boats with the Bucintoro at the top, will parade to recall the glory of one of the most powerful and influential Mediterranean Republics. Among the many boats that will parade there will be “bissone, gondolas, gondolini, caorline, the disdotona and the dodesona”. And then the sumptuous costumes of the figurants: the doge and the dogaressa, accompanied by the highest offices of the Venetian Republic, and by ladies, soldiers, handmaids, squires, musicians, ambassadors and Venetian magisters.
The Historical Regatta is the main appointment of the annual calendar of Voga alla Veneta races, a unique discipline practiced in the world for thousands of years in the Venice lagoon. Today the competitions are divided into categories of age and types of boats: the most famous, exciting and the most popular is the regatta of champions on gondolini, which whiz along the Grand Canal to the finish line in front of the famous “machina”, a spectacular floating stage in front of the Ca ‘Foscari palace.
It is still a very heartfelt event, in fact on the occasion of the “Historical Regatta” Venice sees the San Marco basin and the Grand Canal teeming with boats of all kinds, from which citizens can watch the competitions and cheer up.
