Venice evokes its glorious past with one of the most anticipated events of the year: the “Regata Storica“. This year it will take place on Sunday, September 4 in a riot of historic boats, colors, drapes, costumed figures and the best rowers in the lagoon, ready to compete in Voga alla Veneta competitions.
Before the competitions, spectacular is the famous historical procession along the Grand Canal: hundreds of typical Venetian boats, with the Bucintoro at the head, parade to reenact the glory of one of the most powerful and influential Republics in the Mediterranean. In addition to the disdotona and dodesona, typical Venetian boats “bissone, gondole, gondolini, caorline” parade. And then the sumptuous costumes of the participants: the doge and dogaressa, accompanied by the highest offices of the Serenissima, and Venetian ladies, soldiers, handmaids, squires, musicians, ambassadors and magisters.
The Regata Storica is the main event for competitions in Voga alla Veneta, a unique discipline practiced for thousands of years in the Venetian lagoon. Competitions are divided by age categories and types of boats: the most famous, exciting and popular is the regatta of gondolini. The rowing champions leave from the Lido, reach the San Marco basin, whiz along the Grand Canal to the finish line in front of the famous “machina“, a spectacular floating stage in front of the Ca’ Foscari palace.
It is, however, a very heartfelt event for Venetians. On the occasion of the “Regata Storica“, Venice sees St. Mark’s Basin and the Grand Canal swarming with boats of all kinds, from which citizens can watch the races and cheer themselves up.
