“Stolpersteine” was born from an idea of the German artist Gunter Demnig to counteract the oblivion and bad memories about the tragedy of Nazi deportations during the Second World War.
Since 1992 Demnig has dedicated himself to build the largest widespread monument in Europe, through the installation of “Stumbling stones“, small square blocks of stone (10×10 cm / 3.9×3.9 in) bearing a brass plate inscribed with the name and life dates of victims of Nazi extermination or persecution, and placed in front of their house. Starting from the first stumbling stone installed in Cologne in 1995, over 70.000 “Stolpersteine” have already been installed in Europe. Compared to any other monument dedicated to the Holocaust, the characteristic of “Stolpersteine” is to create a personal commemoration and an invitation to reflection.
On the occasion of the Holocaust Memorial Day 2022, Thursday January 27th will take place the ceremonies of laying of 30 new “Stumbling stones“, in memory of the Venetian citizens deported by the Nazis, with the laying of the first stone in Campo Santa Maria del Giglio at 9 am.
The ceremony will be attended by the President of the City Council Ermelinda Damiano and representatives of the “Centro Tedesco di Studi Veneziani” (German Center for Venetian Studies), the Jewish Community of Venice, and the “Istituto veneziano per la storia della Resistenza e della società contemporanea” (Venetian Institute for the History of Resistance and Contemporary Society).
