From April 20 to 23, 2023, the comedy “Un curioso accidente” will be staged at the Malibran Theater. Lithuanian director Rimas Tuminas breathes new life into a little-visited text by Carlo Goldoni by bringing it to the Venetian stage for its national premiere.
Set in a noble Dutch mansion, the play shows itself as a light divertissement but one that conceals within it the scenic gimmicks typical of Goldoni’s plays. Amorous entanglements and dangerous misunderstandings arise from the game of seduction and courtship.
Plot: it tells the story of the rich Dutch merchant Filiberto, a good and honest man, who hosts in his home Monsieur de la Cotterie, a young French officer, noble and penniless, who falls in love with his daughter Giannina, who reciprocates his love. At this point the good Philibert brings out his true nature, which is not so good and honest. Faced with the idea of becoming related to a nobody, he racks his brains for a solution that would distract the penniless nobleman from both his daughter and his fortune. Love makes even the most submissive maidens particularly cunning. So meek Giannina does not lose heart and finds a way to cheat her father in a “curious accident” that allows her to marry her handsome officer without suffering anyone’s punishment.
