For the “Women Composers” cycle, a concert entitled “Women Composers and the Belle Époque” will be held at the Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista on April 1, 2023.
At the turn of the twentieth century, when the women’s movement was first beginning to gain ground in Europe, the situation became more favorable for women to show their creative talents. In the field of music, until then almost exclusively a male preserve, women artists succeed in having their right to equality recognized. Access to the Prix de Rome competition for musical composition illustrates this perfectly: it was created in 1803, but not until 1904 was a woman – Hélène Fleury – allowed to take part, and the first woman to win the Prix de Rome was Lili Boulanger in 1913.
As a result of this institutional recognition, spaces are opening up for the promotion of works by women composers, and the Bru Zane Romantic Music Center is no exception. Pierre Fouchenneret (violin), Lise Berthaud (viola), Yan Levionnois (cello) and Adam Laloum (piano) perform pieces for strings and piano by Rita Strohl, Hélène Fleury, Charlotte Sohy, Lili Boulanger and Mel Bonis.
